Random shutdowns need a diagnosis
A computer that turns off, restarts, or freezes can interrupt work and put unsaved files at risk. The cause may involve cooling, power, memory, storage, drivers, or Windows. Replacing parts before identifying the problem can add cost without fixing it.
Describe exactly what happens
Does the screen go black while the computer stays on? Does the machine lose power completely? Does Windows show a blue screen or restart by itself? These symptoms can point the investigation in different directions.
- Note whether the problem happens at startup, while idle, or during a game or demanding application.
- Record any error message or stop code.
- Write down recent updates, new hardware, or changes to the power connection.
- Tell your technician if moving the computer or touching a cable changes the behavior.
Check the simple external conditions
Make sure the computer has ventilation and that accessible power and display cables are seated. Keep liquids away from the equipment. If you notice smoke, a burning smell, or a swollen battery, stop using the device and arrange service.
Protect important files
If the computer is stable enough and the drive is not showing signs of failure, make sure important files are backed up. If files disappear, the drive makes unusual sounds, or storage failure is suspected, stop using the system and ask for an evaluation before running repair utilities.
Why repeated resets may not solve it
A Windows reset cannot correct a loose hardware connection, a failed power component, or a cooling problem. A hardware replacement will not necessarily resolve a software fault. The repair needs to address the cause, and intermittent faults may require additional testing time.
